Jin Liu (b. 1973, Chengdu, China) is a visual artist working across photography and painting. Based in Austin, Texas, his work explores the relationship between images, memory, time, and perception.

Jin Liu received a B.A. in Photography from the Beijing Film Academy in 1999. He began his career as a photojournalist and worked for Agence France-Presse (AFP), covering events in China and abroad. In 2008, his work received two Awards of Excellence in the Spot News category at the 66th Pictures of the Year International (POYi).

In 2015, Jin Liu shifted from photojournalism to focus on his artistic practice. Moving beyond the documentary role of photography, he began to examine how images acquire new meanings. In 2021, he published his first photobook, The Rock and the Palm Tree, based on his firsthand experiences reporting on the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq between 2002 and 2009.

At the core of Jin Liu’s practice is an ongoing reflection on creation, mortality, renewal, and the passage of time. Through his work, he considers how ordinary experiences and images can reveal deeper questions about life and human existence.
